Get Behind Fanny: Episode 3

This time Alice, Kristen, and Byron discuss “Hey Bulldog” and “Badge” as well as getting comments from June and Jean Millington too.

We’re adding more hashtags so you may ask questions for June and Jean Millington. For June it’s #JuneJams, and for Jean it’s #JeanJeanie. Use them on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook and we’ll track your questions to be answered in future podcasts.

NOTE: These podcasts will be produced once every two weeks at present. A lot of work goes into these and we’re looking for feedback from the fans to drive the direction of the podcast.

  1. I agree, I love Alice’s drumming on Badge from that live French video. Badge is a real banger! Alice kills it! So, does everyone else, June, Jean and Nickey-with that key solo! Interesting conversation! I enjoyed this, thanks for putting in the work everybody, I appreciate it!

    1. Hi Colleen,
This podcast threw us for a bit, trying to get June and Jean’s recorded comments in without making them look to “far afield.” Kristen pulled off two great interviews, and Byron edited them perfectly into place. We ARE working hard to have this much fun….something about that sounds a little off….oh, well – so glad you appreciate it!

      1. Hey Alice,

I was just thinking and I feel like this is “framed in Fanny” ,………..

“take care of yourself, this is your story
Your voice is shakin’ the walls, and
        They’re crumbling down
But what can I do ‘cept stand here watching you
My fearful eyes are paralyzed with
        Visions of tomorrow swept away”

        “And someone’s gonna get burned”

        -Timeless…huh? #NickeyNotes

        1. Hi Colleen! We’re going to be discussing a bit of “Blind Alley” on Ep. 7, including the first verse. Stay tuned!

    2. Colleen!

We forgot to wish you a HAPPY BIRTHDAY on the 4th podcast, BUT….we remembered on Episode 5 and wished a belated Happy Day. I’m so sorry we missed June, but at least, we didn’t miss it completely!!!

      Best,
      Alice

    3. Hi Colleen,
I’m sorry I forgot to thank you for this compliment, ESPECIALLY since the “Badge” footage from Paris is some of my favorite Fanny footage!
      So, thank you!
      Best,
      Alice

  2. Thanks, Colleen! We had so much fun! We’re still getting to your questions, and we really appreciate your feedback. More soon…! 🙂

  3. Your covers are very well chosen! Were they picked by the band or suggested by others?

    1. We actually discuss this in Ep. 3 of the podcast! Some covers were picked by Fanny and others by their producer, Richard Perry. We’ll be discussing other covers down the line. 🙂

    2. Hi Neil,
Memories are a little hazy about this. As I remember it, Richard Perry brought us “Badge” and “Hey Bulldog,” but some of the others on our LP’s were our choices.
We’ll address more covers on future podcasts!
      Thanks for asking!
      Alice

  4. Thanks for the podcast! Great stuff!

Hey Bulldog and Badge! Great covers of two of my favorites!

Dr. K: “being an historian,” indeed! ? And you have the paper to prove it! Thank you for your dedication to this project and the way you approach it; contemplatively.

Byron: I believe it’s pronounced Hillaire as in hilarious! Ha! But I could be wrong. (please consult Dr. K for an informed opinion)!! Thanks for bringing a bassist’s sensibility to this project!

Alice: I don’t know what to say except I can’t wait to play along. There’s a balanced groove/chops quality to your playing here that just nails it on all accounts!! Thank you!

The rest of my comments are written in the form of headlines.

MORE COW BELL: Research shows drummers are 40% more likely than others to own that t-shirt. You know which one.

WRITER PICKS TITLE OF NEXT NOVEL: What Self-Respecting Midwestern Girl Doesn’t Have a Cow Bell? “It kind of writes itself,” he says.

SAFETY TOPIC: (hey, it came up!) I remember being bundled into the cubby behind the back seat of my dad’s VW Bug–basically a cup holder–but there I slept as he drove me and my mother and older brother to the hospital for my sisters to be born!

PSA: Remember kids, seatbelts save lives and the Groove persists!

    1. I think you win for the best reply to a podcast ever! Thanks, Jim, for all of it! And, yes, I do have the paper to prove it, Hillaire is just like hilarious, and I try to be contemplative (glad it’s working). As for the “headlines”: FABULOUS and totally on the mark! May the Groove be with you, friend! Let us know how you like playing along to Alice’s drumming. 🙂

    2. Hi Jim,
Are you sure you’re not a comedian? LOVE your thoughts…..ALL of them, but I’m not sure of which “t-shirt” you refer to. LOL! Thank you so much for being a part of the fun we’re having!
Best – (and, yes, I’d like to hear how the drumming-to-my-drumming turns out!)
      Alice

      1. The “MORE COWBELL” T-shirt – from Saturday Night Live/Christopher Walken. 😉

  5. Just want Alice to know I got the 5 CD set and my ride has a couple 10″ subs and a 1000 watt Kicker amp so I can share my Fanny with everyone. (That didn’t sound right 🙂
Love watching Alice on the 35 minute Beat Club video. All that energy and the right snap, crackle and pop! Any chance for getting it on CD or DVD???
Wondered what is the background story on the live CD? How did that come about? Wonderful to have that music preserved forever.
And how is Jean doing? Pray the best for her.
Enjoy everything you are doing and sharing with us! Thank you!!!

    1. Hi Konrad,

I can imagine the sound…..Davenport will never be the same! While we would LOVE to have The Beat Club footage available on either/both CD or DVD, we can’t seem to get the rights to ANY of our music……video or music! The Beat Club would be one of the first things I’d want to put out there. The live CD is from a radio show we did after we got back from England when we’d recorded “Fanny Hill” at Apple studios. The radio station is long gone, we had the tape, and said, “Why not?”
Jean is working hard to recover, but none of us knows whether she’ll ever play bass again. I just keep her in my prayers and am hoping for a miracle.
Thanks so much for writing in!
      Alice

    2. What’s up Konrad, from one rad Fanny Fan to another, please be careful when you are blasting your Fanny around town, with your 10” subs and 1,000-watt kicker amp! That’s a lot of wattage in your cottage, especially for Iowa. LOL dude… ROCK ON!!!!

  7. I’m thoroughly enjoying these podcasts. Fanny are so much more than a novelty ‘girl group’ – they seriously kick ass! My favourite footage is the Beat-Club performances. I haven’t heard if it’s been discussed yet, but my late friend John claims that the band played a gig with Denny Laine’s band Balls in the early 1970s. He swore that he saw an advert for the gig which read: “DENNY LAINE’S BALLS – SUPPORT: FANNY”. I’ll be so disappointed if it turns out to be a falsehood x

    1. Hello, Ronnie! Apologies that I’m only seeing this now. I love this story, and I’ll have to check its veracity for you. I’ll let you know what I can find. More soon… Kristen

    2. Hi Ronnie,

I don’t believe the story is true, but it could be, and it’s a GREAT poster! It may have been after I left the band. I know they did one more tour of the UK, which did include a few gigs in Ireland.

BTW, I’ll get your CD out by the end of this week….that’s July 31, if you don’t come back to this page often….

      Best,
      Alice
