Get Behind Fanny: Episode 4

This time Alice, Kristen, and Byron discuss “I Just Realized” and “It Takes A Lot of Good Lovin'” as well as hear from June and Jean answering some fan questions.

We’re adding more hashtags so you may ask questions for the entire band. For Alice it’s #AskAlice, for June it’s #JuneJams, for Jean it’s #JeanJeanie, and for Nickey it’s #NickeyNotes. Use them on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook and we’ll track your questions to be answered in future podcasts.

NOTE: These podcasts will be produced once every two weeks at present. A lot of work goes into these and we’re looking for feedback from the fans to drive the direction of the podcast.

  1. I a little behind the eight ball. So I heard ep 4 today will catchup on 1-3 soon. Really enjoy the podcast. Like the depth you took is into ex…. pick v/s fingers. Great info. I’ll be caught up by ep 5. Love and friendship. Rick.

      1. Is this the same “Ketcham,” who told me on Twitter that you bought both the white vinyl and orange/blue vinyl of the self-titled album, Fanny? If so, hello! If not, hello anyway! Glad you’re liking the podcast and we appreciate you tuning in! 🙂

    1. Hi Ricky,
Isn’t that the cool thing about podcasts? You can listen whenever and in whatever order you want! We’re having so much fun creating them, and it’s really nice to know that folks are enjoying!
      Love and friendship, indeed!
      Alice

  2. Hey! Hey!! Lets keep the levity to a minimum, shall we?

Ha! You guys sound like you’re having too much fun! Another great episode. Thanks!
Just a few quick notes this episode but I’m working on a blog post about you guys to my dozen (?) followers for later. Stay tuned.

Here are the notes. Actually, I’m kind of embarrassed that they’re so brief. I enjoyed the episode and especially the rock and roll, but I didn’t think of anything to ask, instead I just let the music wash over me. Refreshing! A great way to end a work week!

But I suppose pointing all this out right now doesn’t help, does it? I mean, I’ve mentioned the notes, that they’re brief but that was like two paragraphs ago. I think the more I talk about the notes without actually showing you the notes makes it worse. Right? I mean, I should just get to it and not let the repeated announcing of the notes overshadow their smallness. I should probably stop typing “the notes,” huh? I’m not sure, but I may get paid by the word!

Anyhow! Here they are, the notes:

    1. Drummer here. The pick – no pick issue for Jean’s bass is similar I think to the groove – chops discussion previously with Alice. It depends on the player and the song and what’s required at the time!

    2. PANAMA!! That’s one of my favorite songs! Definitely my favorite Van Halen song!

Thanks again for putting this out there. May the Groove be with you all.
    Jim

    1. Hi Jim,
Pick/no pick – who cares? NOT the drummer! I just want to be able to hear what they’re playing so the “groove” is uninterrupted and the rhythm section sounds like one unit! I always had Jean’s bass LOUD in my monitor. Hmmmm, maybe that’s why my hearing is damaged?
      Best,
      Alice

      1. Good point! The rhythm section is where the Groove is born!

Sorry about your hearing though. ;/

  3. Jim! Your comments are always funny, insightful, and spot on. Thank you for continuing to listen to the podcast, and I, for one, am excited to read what you’re writing about us on your blog! Keep us posted. And, in the meantime, May the Groove be with you too! 🙂

  4. I’m the same as Jean re 8-string – IMO a pick is the *only* way to play that but others are free to disagree. I generally do fingers, slap, or pick according to what the bassist in the music I’m playing along with is doing or what I’m trying to get across if it’s totally up to me. For instance, I’ve played bass with the alumni band at a college basketball game, and for the national anthem I went “WWCSD?” (What Would Chris Squire Do?)…I lay out for the first two verses and when the band softens for “And the rocket’s red glare…” I hit that Bb with the pick for one bar, then slid up to a higher note on the same string for the next bar, and I saw the director’s eyes go wide 🙂 – I love creating those little moments like Chris would do.

    1. Hi Jeffrey – this is a wonderful story! Thanks for sharing the memories. As for Jean and a pick, she varied depending on the feeling of the song she and the band were going for. However, she also knows that each musician needs to find what best fits their own style, so there are no hard or fast rules (at least for her anyway). All best, Kristen

  5. Hey, all!
I must’ve missed the memo about a podcast! Just saw June’s FB post about episode 6, and was like, “What???!!!” So I’ve just listened to the first four, and they’re great.
I’m super excited to learn that you found Nicky. I read June’s book about a year ago, and although I loved it, it made me so sad to think of these four incredibly talented human beings splitting up with some acrimony between them, and with apparently no chance for some mending of fences. I understand how those things go – I’ve had some band experiences, and there’s always issues and conflict like that. But it just seemed extra unfair to you all, given the climate of the times and all the additional pressures and bullshit put onto the members of Fanny simply for daring to be women in a so-called men’s world. And you were only 20-somethings!
Well, that isn’t what I thought I’d be writing about, but there you go! I’m looking forward to listening to the next episodes and hope to send in some worthy questions before you stop making these!! Actually, here’s a question: How are you actually producing these? You’re obviously not in a studio together. Are you doing Zoom? Where are each of you, geographically? It would be cool to see some photos of you doing the show!
    Ok, I’ll shut up now!
    Best,
    Dave

    1. Hi Dave,

I agree with you about the acrimony being SO tiring and such a waste, but I also know that I still have some feelings that pop every now and again, so….I’m not going to judge!

Byron is in NC, and Kristen was in CA, and I’m in AZ. Byron turned us on to Zencastr, which makes it so easy. Each participant is on their own recording track, so if I fart, say…..I know, nothing a lady should be talking about….Byron can edit that out without disturbing the flow. Kristen has taken on the task of recording the June an Jean interviews, which is mostly done via Zoom. With Jean’s stroke, that’s about all she can handle.

Photos during the show….I think not! I’m in my underwear on these hot AZ days!

Best, and I’m glad you wrote in and are listening!

      Alice

      1. Haha! You are a trip, Alice! I was only picturing a Zoom screen with all your faces, I swear! Haha! Thanks for your reply.
        Peace!

(Hey, I know AZ is a big state, and I don’t know where anything is, but if you happen to be in or near Cochise(?) County, my amazing friend is running as a write-in candidate for Superior Court Judge, Div. 5. Anne Carl, one of the smartest, committed, and most compassionate people on the planet! Tell your friends!!)

        1. Hi Dave,
I just read your reply, and the elections were Tuesday. Did your friend make it in? I’m in Tucson, and two of my favorites made it through the primaries, so we’ll have a new county attorney, and Gabriella Cesares-Kelly will be the Democrat running for County Recorder. Cool!
          Best,
          Alice
