Get Behind Fanny: Episode 34

Episode 34! In this episode, we take a small break from our #JeanJeannie episodes and bring you a special podcast covering the most recent showing of the “Fanny: The Right To Rock” documentary at the Los Angeles Orpheum theater. Alice and Kristen went to the event where a reunited Fanny (minus Nickey) performed and was introduced by the Linda Lindas all-girl band! Even though Alice and Kristen were worn out from their long road trip, they pulled together an awesome podcast with insights to the events of that great evening.

    1. Hi Nina,

It is coming to the East Coast, but not sure when. Once some dates are announced, I’ll let you know.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

      1. Oh, and kudos and gratitude to you all for putting together a great episode despite being exhausted from your trip!! How rude of me to forget to mention that, first!!

  1. Yes, Alice, Fanny did have a special sound created from four amazing musicians who were blessed to find each other and stayed together to record some amazing music!! Thank you!!

  2. Wasn’t expecting such an emotional posco!!! Certainly wasn’t expecting to tear up as Alice read Jef Fazekas’ letter, or when Kristen was talking about her joy at being on stage as part of “Fanny 3.0”.
Whilst I can only dream of seeing Fanny (in any “version”!), the footage from the Opheum show is something for us all to cherish, and ep#34 the perfect companion piece logging memories and reactions to this special night. Hearing the chanting at the end of the episode reinforcing the fact that Fanny is so very loved.
Thank you to Alice and Kristen for “fleshing out” the evenings events for us, and to Byron for being “Kleenex Monitor” in the studio when the tears flowed! ?
To quote the wonderful Aaron Goldstein, “Life is better with Fanny”.

    1. Yes, you’ll need some tissues for this episode. Once I saw Alice start to break up, I figured I needed to “fill” a bit until she regained her composure. This podcast was an emotional roller coaster of fun and emotion, but what a helluva a ride, man! The Fanny performance was genuinely a once-in-a-lifetime event was and I kick myself for not being there, but it just wasn’t in the cards.

      1. Byron,
Thanks for all you do to put this podcast together. It’s so entertaining!!! Do you think there might be a Zoom podcast so we can see you guys as well? I think we’d all love that if it can’ be pulled off. Keep up the good work!
        Richie K.

        1. Thank you very much, Rich! It is a lot of work on all three of us to put this podcast together, but it’s nice when someone notices my audio editing contributions!

We have talked about doing a video version of one podcast as the service we use does allow the recording of audio and video. I’ll bug Alice and Kristen and see if they’d be up to that sometime this Fall.

  3. I saw Fanny ….at Max’s Kansas City…. and all the shows at Fillmore East…. and was privileged to attend a recording session with Alice…. Jean… Patti and Brie (thank you, Brie)… and all their friends …with Dave Darling producing…. an enormous honor for me… foe personal reasons…I did not attend the Orpheum show… and it broke my heart…. but… thanks to this podcast and the photos of the event ….i can enjoy a little of the feeling which was generated ….thank you all….

    1. Roman…I’m so sorry you weren’t able to be with us at the Orpheum, but you were there in spirit! I’m very happy to hear that our podcast brought you into the feeling of the evening. I keep saying, but it was magic.
      Cheers, Kristen

  4. Hi Alice, Kristen and Byron – thanks for the mention in the podcast – I am so honored and bubbled with Joy! Alice and Kristen thanks for sharing your journey with us and Byron for his excitement in wanting to here more. #34 Episode is such a heartwarming episode. Jef my heart goes out to you and your amazing letter of how Fanny helped you thru the loss of your grandfather. AND —YES YES YES – I was there and the documentary was awesome (so much emotion – I laughed and cried) – thanks Bobbi Jo Hart for bring forth Fanny’s story and sharing with the world – Fanny’s LIVE performance after the screening was outta this world! Excellent choice of songs – “Not My Monkey” started off a killer set with a pumping sound that echoed thru the theatre. Followed by “Butter Boy” – with Jeans mysterious and playful reply (Initials Only) of whom the song was written about with Brie on Drums and Patti on Guitar – Next “Soul Child” with Jean Belting out the soulful sultry words as she delivered without disappointment LOOK OUT GIRL! – By then I was about out of my seat with excitement! June took the lead with “Thinking of You” with Alice on Drums and backing harmonies (Kristen) that were right on point – AND the Last song “When We Need Her” topped off the evening – (at which point I surrendered to standing up and letting loose) – Fanny and the audience participation exchange of energy was truly something – it was such a natural high that you did not want it to end. When FANNY walked off stage with the audience chanting Fanny, Fanny, Fanny “they left you wanting more” (Arron Goldstein quote ) I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to experience FANNY HERSTORY in the making! Love to all for making my dream come true! Melanie

    1. Melanie…you will always be a part of this magical and herstoric evening. Thank you for your love of Fanny, and for your incredible energy and spirit! Love to you for being a part of this journey with us! xxoo

  5. Episode 34 is Very good! Outro was over the top with the audience in the theater cheering Fanny! I had to listen to it repeatedly.

  6. For once I’m not the first to respond & for good reason. It’s not everyday Fanny performs before a paying audience.

As such I’m glad you decided to devote this episode to last Sunday’s show. Kristen fulfiled a lifelong dream while Alice got to hear the chants & cheers for the first time in a long time. The occasion is well worthy of comment & I appreciate you sharing the triumph through the tears.

Whether its helping Jeff Fazekas get through the loss of his grandfather or sparking the creativity of young Lauren Langridge, who may harbor her own dreams of being in Fanny, life is better with Fanny.

    1. Hi Aaron,

How many people get to say that they fulfilled a 50-year dream? As Byron said, I’m still pinching myself…and, yes, I’m still shedding tears of joy. It’s funny that you brought up little Lauren…because I thought of her when I was up there. You definitely said it perfectly: Life is better with Fanny. I know mine is.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

  7. I had commented elsewhere that I was watching the performance online, when suddenly my eyes burst like a broken water pipe. Seeing everybody and knowing the story (at least what has been told publicly), as well as thinking of the health issues that Jean and June have been confronting, ultimately made it a very emotional experience.

      1. Hi Roman,

It was livestreamed, but is not available to view anymore. However, you can view snippets of the videos from “Fanny: The Right to Rock” on Facebook. Or all of FB pages, because we’ve been sharing the videos too.

        Cheers,
        Kristen

    1. Hi John,

It was a very emotional experience for all of us – and that includes Fanny fans and friends. It was an extraordinary moment and I think we all knew to cherish it and take it all in.

Thanks for all you’re doing re. “Induct Fanny into the R&R Hof” FB page!!

      Cheers and pizza,
      Kristen

    1. Hi Steve,

Was “WOW!!!” for the podcast or for the live performance? Or both? Inquiring minds want to know. 🙂

Hope all is well with you these days!

      Cheers,
      Kristen

      1. Hee hee. I could not think of anything else to say about ANY of this episode (and any live performance by FANNY). So the “WOW” covers it all. I am in awe of what is going on with FANNY and the new fans that are coming around. I’m a 50 year guy myself (right with ya Byron) and FANNY is as fresh to me as it was when I first heard “Come and Hold Me”. Your stories of hanging around FANNY as a kid fascinate the hell out of me. I mean…yeah…where else can you get the true FANNY historical references by the people that were there…PRICELESS. OK next Podcast…you’re IT! You’re the STAR of the next podcast. You have been hereby christened Kristen the Great! (wear the crown with honor)

    1. Hi Eric,

Wish you could’ve been there as well! If it wasn’t obvious, we had the time of our lives! Happy to know you enjoyed the posco, and, as always, thank you for your support.

      Peace,
      Kristen

  8. Thanks for the shout-out! I am so happy that Jean decided to participate! After witnessing the outpouring of love and respect for Fanny at the showing of the film at the drive-in in, I wanted Jean to have the chance to experience that in person. Michelle’s willingness to go, along with help from Jean’s son Lee, made it a reality. And Jean has told me that she is glad she went, and that she had no idea how great the reception was going to be. In other words, it was worth it!

    1. Hi Vicky,

I can’t reiterate or stress enough how vital you and Michelle were in making the whole trip so magical. THANK YOU! It makes me very happy to hear that Jeanie is glad she went and that it was all worth it. This is fabulous!!

      Hugs,
      Kristen

  9. Another entertaining, enlightening, emotional, joyous, retrospective, historical and uplifting podcast. Must listening for all Fanny fans! Thank you Alice and Kristen! Through your words describing that “once in a lifetime” evening, allowed “us” to be there too! A special podcast for sure!
    Thanks!

  10. Beautiful beautiful show! All the emotion of that night was there too!!! My spirit was with you ALL!!! Fantastic!!!!
Once again ALWAYS LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!
    LONG LIVE FANNY!!!!
    BRING ON THE RAINBOW!
    ??????

  11. Thanks for sharing these new memories with us. I wish I coulda been there–it sounds like it was a magical night (as I thought it would be). Any plans to put the live performance video out somewhere? I’d love to hear June’s guitar solo (and everything else).
    Kristen: Congratulations! (I’m jealous!)
Alice: I agree 100%: June + Jean + Nickey + Alice = MAGIC! And “Blind Alley” knocks my socks off EVERY time! (And an uptempo shuffle is my favorite beat, but it’s so fuckin’ hard to maintain!)
    Much Love to You All!
