Get Behind Fanny: Episode 30

Episode 30! In this episode, which is our final episode focusing on the documentary film “Fanny: The Right To Rock” by Bobbi Jo Hart, we get to listen to Alice and Kristen’s tales of being at the film’s premiere in San Francisco. We also listen to “Summer Song” from “Mothers Pride” because, you know, it’s Summer!

  1. First of all, a thank you to Alice for describing me as a punmaster. Others are far less generous in the description of this talent.

I enjoyed hearing Alice & Kristen’s observations of the premiere. I’ve never been to a drive-in. So I’ll remember to bring a sweater.

I’ve actually written a review of Fanny: The Right to Rock although I have not posted it yet. I share the panel’s view about Nickey’s presence in the film or lack thereof. Although she may have declined to participate in the documentary it doesn’t change the fact Nickey wrote or co-wrote a majority of the songs on the four Reprise albums. It would be like making a documentary about The Byrds & not mentioning Gene Clark’s songwriting contributions.

Nevertheless, a splendid time was had by Alice & Kristen. If David Bowie were to once again fall back to Earth & watch Fanny: The Right to Rock he would be pleased with Bobbi Jo Hart’s efforts to revivify Fanny. I also believe Bowie would be equally delighted with the Get Behind Fanny podcast.

I look forward to Episode 31 & hear about Fanny’s collaboration with Barbra Streisand.

    1. Hi Aaron,

Well, you do get the pun spot on most times! And, I do think David would be pleased……

      Best,

      Alice

  2. Terrific episode as always. Loved hearing Alice and Kristen reflecting on their journey. I haven’t seen the doc yet, but have also had concerns about how it’s possible to tell the whole story in a 90ish minute documentary. I hope to catch it soon.

I can’t express enough how valuable this podcast is to me, and I’m sure to my fellow UFOs. Hearing the story from those who were there, even when people’s memories conflict with one another (Rock & Roll Rashomon!), is always fascinating and entertaining, and often quite emotional.

The podcast will serve as a valuable historical document, just as the Beat-Club and French TV footage, June’s Land of a Thousand Bridges book, the interviews with Jean and Alice for the Women of Rock Oral History Project, and the Fanny Rocks website itself are.

The breezy “Summer Song” always strikes me as such a different tune compared to a lot of the rest of Mothers Pride, especially with the horns, the “la la” refrain, and the overall bubblegumminess of it. So different from harder edge in songs like “I Need You Need Me” and “I’m Satisfied”, the wit and sarcasm of “Solid Gold”, the fear and paranoia of “Last Night I Had a Dream”, and even the dark whimsy of “Polecat Blues”.

“All Mine” and “Summer Song” feel like an AM detour on an FM album to me, if that makes any sense. Good songs, both of them, but I think of them as an entr’acte of sorts on Mothers Pride. Geez, what a good album!

Byron, you’ve outdone yourself with this week’s contest. I’ve got my answers ready! ¡Viva Nickey! ??

    1. Hi Tim,

We did take a few detours from FM, you’re right. I think it added a little complexity and made us less of a “one note” band (if that’s an apt description?)

As I’ve said on the posco (I THINK I’ve said it), as much as I loved Nickey’s songs and that they were the most fun to play, I enjoyed those detours as well.

      Best,

      Alice

  3. Another great posco. Glad you guys had a great time at premier. Byron, your Nickey edit shows again what a fantastic piano player and musician she is.
    Peace,
    E

    1. Hi Eric,
Byron does have a great touch, yes? Thanks for the feedback!
      Best,
      Alice

    1. Hi Guy,
As always, thank you for listening and supporting us so well!
      Best,
      Alice

  4. Hi, Alice & Kristen & Byron!

Jean and I enjoyed this week’s podcast about Alice & Kristen’s Excellent Adventure. Byron knows his Detroit iron: The car (“Old Yeller”) is indeed a 1968 Cutlass convertible (350 cid V8, 650 cfm 4-bbl Edelbrock carb, 700R4 transmission [w/overdrive], dual exhaust, *and* Positraction, for all you gearheads [Gloria]). I note that it was, in fact, the car’s presence that was requested for the event; my attendance was entirely incidental as custodian of the vehicle.

The car and I had a terrific time at the movie premiere, and we were honored to chauffeur Alice and Brie and Bobbi Jo around the drive-in. The outpouring of love, respect, and admiration for the three of them and for Fanny was absolutely wonderful. As we drove slowly up and down the rows of parked cars, people honked their horns and dashed up to takes selfies. For me, it was a thrill to meet Alice and Kristen in person.

I was pleased to do my little part. The only thing now is that the car thinks she should get an agent.

    1. I’m a gearhead when it comes to ’60s cars. I can’t work on them at all, but I love driving them! Positraction! My ’69 Chevy Caprice had that and I could do lawn jobs like no one’s business! Thanks for all the details us car folks like to know!

    2. I was salivating reading the specs of your gorgeous car, Vicky!

My Dad had a 1968 Pontiac Firebird convertible which I remember vividly when we were kids. A rarity in the UK!!! Top down, he would roar along our local seafront road as my sister and I had our hair blown around as we sat in the back seats! I’m quite bald now… I wonder if there is a link? ?

    3. Hi Vicky,

It was so much fun to finally meet you, and to share a few moments of all that craziness. I kind of felt like I had a comrade-in-arms, and I wanted you to know I appreciated your support!

That’s why I asked Jean to give you my email address, but I can thank you here as well!

I hope you didn’t catch your death of cold on the way home, and it was SO kind of you to drive us around and share your great Cutlass as requested. But, you have it backwards. The car is NOTHING without you!

      Best,

      Alice

  5. Summer Song might (arguably) the best song on “Mother’s Pride”. I almost feel guilty even saying this. I should take it back? Oh no I said out loud…

I HAVE to see the movie. I’m, like, salivating…but THAT gets messy. Saliva all over…I mean the clean-up is seriously yucky. But I digress.

BTW do the harmonies in vocals get ANY credit at all? I know I find some similarities to The Beatles which, in my weird mind includes harmonies besides the music and writing and the coolness. All the girls screaming all the time. Not fans as much as screaming coming from Fanny Hill. Oh…NOW I get it. hee hee hee. Those were NICE screams.

I quick note about what you’ve mentioned about Nickey’s lack of involvement in the movie. Her perspective on her own independence as it related to FANNY as well as her insight into her own songs. If I ever were to meet her I would gush over her keyboard work AND her different singing voices. Self-taught players who play like she did deserve shitloads of recognition.

How the hell can we get FANNY into the R & R Hall of Fame. I mean the Go-Gos got in and they’re just 5 punks who wouldn’t know real music if it bit them in the ears, nose, throat, and way lower…kind of mid-range if you will. FANNY should have been inducted when they first opening the fucking hall…I mean really? Who’s ass needs to be kicked to get FANNY in?

I agree 100% with what Applescruff mentioned about if Bowie fell back to earth. Great line by the guy, I assume, took a clue from George Harrison’s “All Things Must Pass” to latch on to his moniker. I love it.

I’m going to spread the coolness around a bit. I said Alice was the cool one BUT this week and because he worked so damn hard last week…Byron gets the “Cool Crown” this time. Sorry, Alice…ya gotta show up for these things to be nominated. Next podcast?…hmmmm workin’ on it.

  6. Another great episode!!!
Love the reminiscences about the road trip; it’s making want to watch the movie more and more! I can’t wait for it to arrive in the UK!

Whilst it is a shame Nickey isn’t “here” to participate, I totally agree with Byron about her “moving on” and having a totally different life. I just very grateful that the gave us the music she did!

Here’s to episode 31! Which leads me to an #askalice question! (Drum roll)…
When participating in the Perry produced “Barbra Joan Streisand” album, did Richard Perry recommend the band to Barbra, or had she heard them and requested to have them play and sing on the album with her?

Best wishes and love to you all as always! ?

  7. are you still taking Alice questions? I would like to know what “we are working hard to have this much fun..I know something sounds a little off… oh well so glad you appreciate it” means….remember I was talking about liking the French vid and this is what Alice chose to say to me…. I perceived this as random and rude..would love to be told I’m incorrect. #askAlice
