Get Behind Fanny: Episode 27

Episode 27! We celebrate the podcast’s first anniversary with a look back on our first year with reflections from each of Alice, Kristen, and Byron, along with a lot of great Fanny song clips!

Quote from Mia:

“I keep thinking about you, Alice, Byron, June, Jean and Nickey and all of the supporting characters I’ve come to ‘know’ and love… I just keep coming back to one thing… As my (our) world and life shut down for a pandemic, a whole new world of music opened up like a beautiful flower, filled with music, lyrics and laughter in abundance. I was born in 1968 so I know I was alive when Fanny was, but I had no way of knowing them. Pre-Covid, my favorite thing to do was to travel around the country for concerts. That was my lifeblood and my escape… when that was taken away, Fanny came into my life. I am really only making this connection right now! And now I feel like part of a group of people who have discovered a buried treasure! If it weren’t for 45, I’d NEVER have gotten on Twitter, never would have met you, and would STILL not have a clue about Fanny (Alice- better late than never indeed!!!) Now I find myself wondering if I’ll ever travel to see Fanny Friends, a Fanny themed concert…and maybe head to one day 🙂 I continue to love and appreciate the mutual admiration society that is the Fanny Podcast. I love Alice’s infectious laugh, hearing stories from Alice, June & Jean, knowing Byron is front and center of something he’s loved his whole life… but mostly hearing my new friend (you, Kristen!) share her life, love and dreams playing out. You are all a true escape to another world and an inspiration when I’m feeling low. I laugh and dance and dream with every podcast. Aaaaaand… now I’m crying! OK – I don’t care if this makes the podcast, this is my Fannyversary tribute to you.
Much love… Mia
P.S. And I feel like I have 2 new friends in Nigel and Applescruff.”

  1. Happy Fannyversary “Get Behind Fanny”!!

(I dedicate this to Byron, Alice, Kristen, June, Jean and Nickey)

“Get Behind Fanny” couldn’t have come at a better time. Having discovered Fanny in February (as the world was plunging into sh*t), I was riding high discovering all I could about this amazing band. I bought the CDs via the website, and was soaking up the brilliance of the music (making up for so much lost time!).
Following various Social Media pages dedicated to the band, to see a podcast would start in May (when the world *was* plunged into the sh*t), I wanted “in” from the beginning. To have missed out on the music for so many years, I didn’t want to miss out on the Podcast!

It’s been a lifeline; an indispensable companion to me, a humble delivery driver. Working through the pandemic (which has been a different world), to be able to listen, re-listen, contribute and immerse myself in the podcast has certainly
helped to keep my sanity and equilibrium in these crazy times.

Learning about their history, songs and those who have worked with them has not only brought me closer to the band, but also to their associates and the new friends have made along the way. For that, I’m eternally grateful.

The podcast has grown and developed so much in the past year. It’s “appointment listening” and everyone involved who works so hard to produce it should feel very proud of their achievements.

So, here’s to the next year of “GBF”. Alas, no
RnRHoF this year (grrrrr), but those that care *KNOW* the time is coming.

Thank you to Byron for your friendship, being the webmaster and keeping the flame burning, Alice for your friendship and your dedication keeping the music available for us to enjoy, Kristen for your friendship and commitment to get the band you love so much into the HoF, June for your friendship, music and indomitable spirit, to Jean (The Queen of Bass!) and to Nickey (wherever you are, I offer my best wishes!)

…Alice is so right, “it’s not when you discovered Fanny, but *that* you discovered Fanny” ❤️?❤️

    1. Thanks, Nigel!
I’m just so glad you did discover us, and that we’ve been able to become friends via Fanny!
Best to you, Andie and Lauren!
      Alice

  2. Happy Fannyversary Alice, Kristen, Byron, June, Jean & to Nickey wherever she might be.

Like many other UFOs, Fanny & the Get Behind Fanny podcast has opened a new world for me in the pantheon of early 1970’s music which I have loved since childhood. Like many new Fanny fans, I wish had come across the band much sooner. But as Alice tells it on the posco, “It’s not when you discovered Fanny, it’s that you discovered Fanny.”

In my case, I discovered Fanny in June 2020 when I came across the Beat Club footage of “Ain’t That Peculiar” on YouTube & soon thereafter the entire 35 minute Beat Club session.

With my Fannyversary coming up, I hope it would be possible to spotlight “What’s Wrong With Me” & “A Little While Later” both from Charity Ball in an upcoming episode. If not in June then perhaps in July to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the release of Charity Ball or possibly in September for my birthday.

“What’s Wrong With Me” is the shortest song in the Fanny canon at 1:42 while “A Little While Later” is the longest at 5:39. Aside from the contrast in their length, I believe these songs represent the finest work of Jean & Nickey, respectively & also represent the most unappreciated songs of a band which until recently was long under appreciated.

Much kudos to Kristen for reminding me that I had likened her intro of “Shade Me” to a poetry jam. I look forward to Episode 28 to start the journey towards the second Fannyversary.

    1. Hello Aaron!

Yes, I love this idea! I still have a screenshot of your suggestion from earlier this year, and we haven’t forgotten about it. We will definitely get to it at some point soon. (We usually have a couple of episodes sketched out ahead of time.) I have marked down that your Fannyversary is in June, and it looks like you and Nigel share a birthday month in September! But we’ll get to it sooner than that.

Thank you so much for being a part of the podcast, and for all of your feedback, insights, and puns!

Cheers to a second year around the sun!

      1. Fantastic!!! Or more aptly Fannytastic!!! Looking forward to it. Good things come to those who wait.

    2. Hi Aaron!
Thank you so much for your kind words, and I know that we’ll get to your suggestion, but it may not be in your Fannyversary month. I hope that’s okay, ’cause we’ve got some big obligations that may get in the way. Maybe you’d be okay with a shout out in June, and we could use your idea sometime over the summer?
      Thanks,
      Alice

  3. Was there a Fanniversary announcement for April. I don’t recall if they were annoounced,

    1. Steve, was your Fanniversary in April? I thought I had taken down all the names for that month. If I missed you, we’ll make it up on the next episode. Let me know.

      1. No biggie for me…I just don’t remember hearing the Fannyverseries from April. Soooo many listeners now and for good reasons. I like to brag a bit that I was an original listener from the beginning as was Byron. I did a comparison of Byron and me in another post here. I also have a great idea for some Fanny art that I’m working on and I HOPE it turns out as I want it. I’ll probably put that up on Twitter or e-mail or something like that. You 3 have to be the most perfect people for this posco…er…I mean…a…um…hell I don’t even know what I mean. Rock on Fanny fans!!! Oh, and you did mention me in this episode. I was surprised because most of my posts are screwball stuff but that was a curious post AND I get the secret. So cool! Oh………PODCAST was the word I was thinking of. LOL

        1. Steve,
You and I have acknowledged our love of “screwball…..”
          Best,
          Alice

    1. Happy Fannyversary, Guy! So glad you enjoyed the podcast and thank you again for letting us join the “Sonic Landscapes Network.”

    2. Hi Guy,
I am sometimes breathless (or, out of breath) trying to keep up with the “young ‘uns.” HA!
      Thanks,
      Alice

  4. Byron and me comparisons. Byron was 14 when he was turned on to Fanny, I was 15. First album was mind-blowing for both of us. We both love “Come and Hold Me”. Byron is a bass player and loves hearing Jeannie’s bass. Damn right!!! I was a bass player but my left hand doesn’t work right anymore so I can’t play (Damn again). I’m a music first guy as opposed to hearing lyrics first, similar to Byron’s listening habits. Nickey’s “Conversation With a Cop” invites you in to hear the lyrics from the “good morning” beginning. You can’t NOT ignore the lyrics. A lot of Nickey’s songs were like that. You can’t ignore the lyrics. It AIN’T fricking possible. Byron has a nice smooth deep voice, very radioish. I was a DJ years ago and had the same nice deep voice that is all gone because of certain neck problems. So dude we may be brothers from a different mother. Thoughts? Words? Basslines? Fanny fan?…LOL Yup ALL THE ABOVE! You people ROCK. I also found Byron’s web site very early on in 2002. BE well, all!

    1. Brothers from another space-time continuum it seems. 🙂

Thank you for the kind words! Glad we check all the boxes together! Here’s to another year of listening some great Fanny tunes and stories.

  5. That would be “Harrold”. My numb little finger causes all kinds of typing errors.

  6. Happy Behindaversary, Alice, Kristen and Byron!
The podcast has been a true blessing this year!

    1. Thank you so much, Jef! The podcast has been a true blessing for me this year too!

    2. Thank you, Jef,
      That’s funny…..”behindaversary….”
      Know I love you,
      Alice

  7. Pivots and Posco’s
    Shelties and Sheepdogs
    Pasties and Paratittles
    Badges and Bulldogs

    HAPPY FANNYVERSARY!!!

Such a joy to listen back at all the fun, love and music from the past year.
This “Humble Delivery Driver” was quite choked up as you kindly read out my comments, and I offer all my best wishes to all you other fabulous UFOs!

Here’s to another journey around the sun with you all; celebrating the best damn band that deserve bigger recognition and love.

    ❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️

    1. I love it, Nigel! Love your insights, takes, and commentary. And we love you and your participation with the “Get Behind Fanny” podcast. Here’s to you, another year around the sun together, and cheering Fanny along the way to the R&RHoF! ❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️?❤️

    2. Nigel,
For a minute, I thought you were channeling Julie Andrews, and we were being taken to the Austrian Alps!
      Love it!
      Alice

  8. I haven’t had a chance to catch up but wanted to congratulate you on your 1 year!!! It seems like yesterday I found my favorite drummer ever! Hope y’all check out my Fanny vid… RELAX it is all good stuff!
The generous lady,Martha, who loved music and kindly left me her piano after her passing, would be so happy about her shoutout- real cool touch

    1. Hi Colleen! You’ve been with us since the beginning of the podcast, so thanks for all your contributions! Cheers to You!

    2. Hi Colleen,
Thanks so much, for the congrats! You have been there from (almost?) the beginning, and I appreciate your loyalty a ton!
      Best,
      Alice

  9. Hi All!
Here’s my Fanny Podcast appreciation comment:
I listen to the podcast (posco) with Jean. Listening to them with her gives me the chance to focus on her playing and raise my bass player hero worship of Jean to an even higher level. Listening to the podcast also lets me learn more about Jean and June from before I got to know them. Also, as someone who has played bass with many drummers, Alice is my dream of a drummer, locked in and kicking ass!

    1. Hi Vicky!

What a treat for both you and Jean to be able to discuss playing together! Yes, you’re definitely learning from the best. As for Alice being a dream of a drummer — I absolutely agree! Cheers to you and all your support of Jean and the podcast/posco!

      Hugs,
      Kristen

    2. Hi Vicky,
Jeanie made it easy to lock in with, and I loved how we kicked ass together!
      Thanks for commenting!
      Alice

  10. Happy Fannyversary to everyone! I have enjoyed the posco every time. It is appointment listening. Thanks to Alice, Byron and Kristen for doing it. And thanks to Fanny for being Fanny, who in one year has become one of my favorite bands of all time.
    Love you guys.
    Peace
    E

    1. Hi Eric!

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us!

Love and peace to you too,
      Kristen

    2. Hi Eric,
I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the “posco” as we are, and that’s not a bad appointment to keep!
      Best,
      Alice

  11. Happy Fannyversary! After 27 episodes, it truly feels like sitting around with friends – thanks for making such a natural-feeling and informative appointment-listening podcast.

I hope that when all is said and done and the world returns to normal that there is the possibility of a ‘Fanny-Fest.’ I’d be there in a heartbeat and think that it would be a great opportunity to showcase a lot of great bands, inspired by and in the vein of Fanny.

Be well everyone! Can’t wait for the next episode!

    1. Hi Jason,

I love the idea of a Fanny Fest! Truly a stellar idea! We already Portobello Express doing “Charity Ball.” Now we just need Def Leppard to cover “Blind Alley,” and they can headline it. Just saying….

Thank you also for your kind words about the podcast! Here’s to another trip around the sun together!

      Cheers,
      Kristen

    2. Hi Jason,
Even if we’re in our own homes/offices when we record the podcast, you comment is one of my favorite reactions. It DOES feel like we’re just sitting in one of our living rooms chatting…albeit with a great stereo system…!
I will start thinking about a “Fanny-Fest,” and what that would have to look like. Hmmmmmmm… food for much thought!
      Thanks,
      Alice

  12. My Fannyversary is based on a sunny Saturday afternoon in May 1972 when I bought the Fanny Hill album at a local record store. Fanny’s versions of “Ain’t That Peculiar” and “Hey Bulldog” were the primary reasons for my purchase. It’s also my birthday month. Cheers! Bob

    1. Hi Bob,

I love that your Fannyversary is in May (like ours), and that we happened to play both “Ain’t That Peculiar” and “Hey Bulldog” for the Fannyversary podcast! Serendipity.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

    2. Hi Bob,
Well, it’s taken me so long to get to responding to the comments, I’m sorry to have missed wishing you a Happy Birthday in May! I know….. It’s only June 2nd, but still….
I am so pleased that you like the podcast and are enjoying it right along with us!
      Best,
      Alice

  13. Happy Poscoversary, everyone! As others have said, the podcast became appointment listening on first contact. You make every other Friday morning special, leaving nuggets of history, musical education, thoughtfulness and laughter without fail. Here’s to many more years, and good health, especially to June and Jean.

A point about the list of contributors: I am Dave Roberts or Welsh Dave, but not Dave W. I introduced the “Welsh Dave” handle in an attempt to eliminate confusion after Dave W, a different guy entirely, commented on the same podcast as I. Seems I only succeeded in making matters more confused. Oops! Sorree….

    Lots of love,
    Wotsisname XX

    1. Hi Dave,

Thank you so much for clarifying that there are indeed two Daves – Dave W and you, Welsh Dave or Dave Roberts. I’ll make sure to fix the above block of names.

As for comments about the podcast: Thank you so very much! This line made me tear up (in a good way): “You make every other Friday morning special, leaving nuggets of history, musical education, thoughtfulness and laughter without fail.”

We wouldn’t be here without people like you, so cheers and know that we’re very grateful!

      Lots of love,
      Kristen/Dr. K/Animal lover xx

    2. Dear Wotsisname,
Kristen HAS cleared up the list above, but I really like your new handle…..LOL!
      Best,
      Alice

    1. Anyone making a purchase may request an autograph from Alice, and it is up to her to decide which items to sign or not. As for Kristen, that would be Alice’s decision to make as she is the member of the band running the site. But the logistics of having any podcast member besides Alice sign items would be rather difficult at best in my opinion.

      1. For sure man I knew it was a long shot. Thanks for getting back to me and being honest.

    2. Hi Colleen,
I’d be happy to sign a shirt for you, and I would also be happy to ask Kristen to sign it as well, and she’d be able to do that (if she says yes) before I send it out.
It makes me want to create a Get Behind Fanny Podcast t-shirt, but I won’t even go there…..too much money and too little storage space for the inventory……argh! But, you got me thinking!
      Best,
      Alice

  14. Congrats Alice, Kristen and Byron on the First Fannyversary Podcast. The podcasts keep getting better and better. Just a joy to listen too! And so informative for us Fanny fans from so many different perspectives. Fanny came into my life by accident while doing a “garage band” search, which somehow led to a 70’s unknown band search, then just selecting the “Badge” cover. After listening to that song, I searched and listened to more and more Fanny. I do not analyze why I like a certain song, album or group. I like what I like and I will like the song, albums or groups from moment of discovery to the end of my life. I still listen to my all time favorite album, King Crimson’s “In the Court of the Crimson King”, just as I will do with all of Fanny’s songs and albums. Fanny (Alice, June, Jean and the enigmatic Nicki) created some fantastic, emotional, unique, lyrical, thought provoking, foot stomping, powerful and beautiful listening songs. Which take the listener on a soothing, inspiring, caring, funny, disheartening, heartening and loving and captive journey created by their musicianship attacking your soul and senses at the same time. The four of them together worked. Doesn’t matter if they liked each other or not! When they tuned up and played, “they were one”! And they were damn good! And that is all that matters! They set the bar really really high and they accomplished a lot as a band. Fanny’ the band’ and you three should all be proud, very proud! One day Fanny, will be recognized, as they should be, As one of the Greatest Rock Bands,,,,, EVER!!

    1. Hello Roger!

What a fabulous comment! Thank you! We love that you’re enjoying the podcast, and that Fanny has become one of your fave bands. (How could they not?) Let us know when your Fannyversary is, and we’ll give you a shout out. If not your Fannyversary, then your birthday for sure.

      Cheers to you,
      Kristen

    2. Wow, Roger,
Your words have given me a slight lump in my throat (and no, I’m not choking on a cookie). Thank you so much for these kind words. It’s interesting to me that our music really does hold up, and I can only say that, having listened along with Kristen and Byron and all of our new (and old) fans as we create each podcast.
      It’s a journey, but it’s one I’m very happy to be on…
      Best,
      Alice

  15. Happy Fannyversary, team!
Since seeing the Fanny film earlier this month via Hot Docs, I’ve found the podcast and binged the entire thing — finally hit this episode today. What a strange but beautiful idea for a podcast, and I love it.
As a show suggestion, maybe it’s outside your purview, but what about one touching on Life After Fanny — i.e. Millington and Barclay solo albums, Fanny Walked the Earth, and even (gasp!) a look at Rock and Roll Survivors.
Life Before Fanny would be fascinating too — are there any recordings that exist of the Svelts?
Amyway, I’ll take whatever you guys serve up.
Meantime, here’s an article published today on the Fanny film from a Canadian documentary magazine: http://povmagazine.com/articles/view/finding-fanny
And, if you’re in Ontario, you can see it at the Inside Out festival from May 27-June 6. It’s a great little music doc, and I’m sure it will turn many people into fans:
    https://insideout.ca/toronto-films/fanny-the-right-to-rock/
Thanks, and good luck in your second year!

    1. Hi Roman,

So glad you found the podcast, as well as the documentary, “Fanny: The Right to Rock.” Needless to say Alice and the other band members are a big part of it, we’re keeping up on all the articles, etc. The U.S. premiere is in S.F. in June, so we’re looking forward to it.

As for the podcast suggestions: We stick with the first 4 Fanny albums on Reprise and the first 4 original Fanny members. The Svelts and “Rock and Roll Survivors” is out of our purview, since Alice and June left Fanny before Casablanca picked up the band for their 5th/final album. As for recordings by the Svelts – no recordings. When Richard Perry signed Fanny to Reprise, they were still called Wild Honey, but soon the band changed its name to Fanny.

Anyway, thank you for the ideas, and keep ’em coming! Thanks also again for your wonderful feedback.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

  16. Thank you Alice. Thank you Byron. Thank you Kristen. Thank you Jean. Thank you June. Thank you Nickey. Fanny Forever!

    1. Happy Fannyversary, Perry! Thank you for being a part of the podcast/posco too! Viva la Fanny!

    2. Thank YOU, Perry,
Without all of you and your comments, I/we wouldn’t know if all of our hard work really matters.
      I believe it does.
      Best,
      Alice

  17. Greetings from balmy NYC –
    Happy anniversary all.
I’ve a suggestion. Why not play the entire tune when you play a song instead of a truncated version. Just when I’ve got my air gui-tar out the case and strapped on the clip ends. I don’t think you’ve got time constrictions on the podcast; so why not?
    Thanking you in front –
    P

    1. Hi Paul,

Thanks for the suggestion! Our podcast is about the members, the music, and the musicians influenced by Fanny, so the songs are played to keep the conversation going. The great news is that you can purchase the Fanny CDs on this website and listen to the songs all the way through!

We sincerely thank you for listening to the podcast and for playing air gui-tar along with June!

      All the best,
      Kristen

      1. Greetings Kristen from balmy NYC –
        Thanx for the quick response.
“The great news is that you can purchase the Fanny CDs on this website and listen to the songs all the way through!” Have already purchased all things Fanny including (gasp!)
RnR Survivors. Am just too lazy to pause the podcast and listen to the CDs.
        Thanking you in front –
        P

  18. Congratulations on reaching your first Fanny podcast anniversary. I really enjoyed the special edition, as I do every broadcast, and wanted to echo all the positive comments and love for this wonderful fortnightly half hour of audio magic that has kept us entertained, knowledgeable, and sane during a tough year. The experiences relived, thanks to the excellent communication and engaging skills of the podcasters, has enabled many of us (well certainly me) to realise our own rock and roll dreams through the dedication of such a wonderful band. Keep rocking Fanny, you are my godmothers and I’m with you all the way. Lots of love Ann x

    1. Hello and thank you, Ann! You have been a big part of the podcast – as has your sister – and we’re thrilled to hear that we’ve kept you sane during a tough year. I feel the same way about doing the podcast. It’s kept me sane as well. Well, kind of. 😉 Here’s to another trip around the sun together! Cheers and love, Kristen x

    2. Hi Ann,
Aren’t you and Nick supposed to be finishing up the windows…..or, working on the last bathroom remodel? Thank you for taking the time to write us such a sweet note. Knowing how full your hands are at the moment, it means a lot!
      Love,
      Alice
