Get Behind Fanny: Episode 22

Episode 22 is a special episode dedicated to June Millington’s socially conscious and touching song “You’ve Got A Home” from “Fanny Hill” as well as we briefly discuss June’s recently disclosed health issue.

Alice, Kristen, and Byron are joined by Jean and June Millington via pre-recorded interviews.

From UFO Nigel Langridge:

As for the beautiful “You’ve Got A Home”… I can only assume June wrote it for/about Brie’s daughter Brandi (“Punkin”)… from what I’ve read in June’s book Brie and Brandi lived at FH for a while, and she could’ve been the inspiration. June’s 12-string playing and slide work are stunning. Offering space to the lyric but providing us with a melancholic edge bolstered by the sweet backing vocal harmonies. Lyrically we have the tumult of storm tempered with bedtimes, the desire of a house in a perfect place, building fires and the simple sweet surprise of snow… it’s very comforting. It’s a massive contrast to the lyric “I didn’t plan it but I’m glad that you were born.” It is certainly a paean to single parents; June was years ahead of her time writing this!

  1. Hello All,
I just “discovered” Fanny about a year ago (best thing that happened in 2020–seriously!). I was in high school 1970-1974, played in a band (still do), and listened to the radio constantly. You guys must not have gotten any airplay in NYC, ’cause I don’t remember hearing you. I did know the name though, from the Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll. So when the Beat Club video came up on YouTube, I was curious. Wow! I was blown away! What a tight band! (No one ever mentions that the Beat Club recordings of “Ain’t That Peculiar,” “Blind Alley,” and “Hey Bulldog” were done before the studio versions, which shows me how super-prepared you were!) Since then I’ve listened to and read everything about Fanny I can find online. I’ve been listening to the podcast since the beginning, and wanting to comment, but….
The first time I heard “You’ve Got a Home,” I was stunned. I still get emotional every time I listen to it. It’s so achingly beautiful, sad but full of love. The lyrics are so simple and direct, I guess that’s why they’re so moving. Thank you, June. I just wish more people in the world would hear this timeless song (and all of Fanny’s music, for that matter–I’m trying to spread the word).
Anyways, thanks to everyone for doing this podcast. It’s great hearing your opinions and memories (such as they are!) and getting some behind-the-scenes poop. I’ve got tons of questions, but I’ve gone on way too long already. So I’ll just send a lotta love to you all, and some extra to June. Peace.

    1. Hi Perry,

So glad to hear you’re enjoying the podcast! If it’s not obvious, we’re having a blast working on putting them together and being able to listen and dissect Fanny’s music. What could be better than that? Please let us know if have any questions. Seriously, it’s great to have you on board and a new member of the Fanny family. Any chance you remember what month you discovered Fanny last year? We’ll give you a shout out for your Fannyversary. 🙂

      Cheers,
      Kristen

      1. Hey Kristen,
Thanks for the nice welcome. My questions are all pretty trivial compared to the contents of this episode, so I’ll save ’em for another day. Goin’ back through old texts, it looks like my Fannyversary will be in May. Hard to believe, I thought it was earlier. But last year felt about 20 years long!

        1. Hey Perry,

Okay, I’ll put you down for a Fannyversary in May. I totally agree that last year felt like 20 years. I certainly aged that much in one year. 😉

          Cheers,
          Kristen

    2. Perry,
Welcome aboard! My main take-away from you comments is: PLEASE, ask the questions! We love to answer as many as we can! Thank you for your kind words!
      Best,
      Alice

      1. Hey Alice,
Thanks, I will. For now I just wanna tell you I saw the video of the Korean girl playing drums along with “Blind Alley” and how great it was for you to encourage her. In the words of TV legend Joe Franklin, “It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.” You and Jean and June are both! (Sorry if I’m getting sappy!) Much love to you all. –Perry

  2. Kristen’s phrase “beautiful defiance” sums up June impeccably. That beautiful defiance is radiated in her smile. When it comes to fighting cancer that’s at least half the battle.

“You’ve Got a Home” is my favorite song on Fanny Hill. It might very well be June’s best composition.

BTW, I agree with all of you. June has got this!!!

    1. Hi Aaron,

“You’ve Got a Home” is definitely top 3 of my fave June songs.

Thanks for all support re. June!

      Cheers,
      Kristen

    2. Thanks Aaron,
I, too, loved Kristen’s coining of “beautiful defiance!”
      Best,
      Alice

  3. Only 20mins… ? No no no… this wasn’t your “usual” podcast… *this* was something far deeper, emotional and unifying for Fanny friends, family and UFOs alike. Perfect song choices; the slide guitar in “You’ve Got A Home” is as beautiful and dignified as the lady playing it.
This was a “real” and “stark” 20mins, Byron’s frankness about his sister’s single mum status and the unfairness and narrow minded prejudices that it attracts, and Alice and Kristen’s heartfelt love and best wishes for June made for a though provoking and reflective episode.

    Kristen nailed it… “beautiful defiance”.

Only 20mins? Well, I cried… and we got two slamming tracks… that’s a fair trade in my book!

Love, light and peace to you all as always. Thank you.

    ❤️?❤️

    1. Thank you, Nigel. We really wanted to honor and acknowledge what June is going through, so that we can all send her the golden liquid light she wants and needs to heal her body. I’m glad our goal of this podcast was met. Oh, and we’ll be posting your comments on “You’ve Got a Home” here, but we’ll save your comments on “Cat Fever” for next time. Cheers and love to you, Andie, and little Lauren. ❤️?❤️

    2. Thanks, Nigel,
We just felt we had to honor June with this one, even if we’d prepared a longer version. Kristen nailed it!
      Good tears,
      Alice

  4. Hi fellow UFOs…
I just listened to #22. Thanks for another great segment.I absolutely LOVE “You’ve Got A Home.”
June was light years ahead of everybody when she wrote this. The lullabylike quality, the tasteful slow slide riffs, the harmonics, the wonderful harmonies, and simply stated lyrics, are all parts of this beautifully expressed song. The sum is greater than the parts.
Glad you played a second tune so I could hear Alice!
Keeping June and Jean in my prayers and thoughts as they fight their separate health battles.I hope we get to hear Jean play bass someday and I know you got this June! You are fierce and will overcome .Fanny’s ladies are ALL my sheroes!
Thanks again and be safe.Love to all!

    1. Thanks, Guy,
June and Jean both have so much positive energy heading their way, and we all have you all to thank for it!
      Best,
      Alice

  5. Kristen, Alice, Byron, your podcasts are very well done. “Beautiful defiance” is a lovely description from you who know June so well. Thanks for sharing it with us. When I first heard “You’ve Got A Home,” I was very taken by June’s slide guitar. It reminded me of the slow, sometimes forlorn and sometimes dreamy slide of Lowell George and pre-Eagles Joe Walsh on some of their slower tracks, which I love. Lyrics take me back to my birth mom, who was ditched by my birth father and strong-armed by her 1950s, Uber-Catholic, “what will the neighbors think” family into giving me up for adoption. Such a beautiful, healing song by June.

    1. Hi Dennis,
I’m so glad you found some solace in “You’ve Got A Home.” June has always had the power to do that!
      Best,
      Alice

    2. Hi Dennis,

I’m very touched by your comments. Thank you for sharing. “You’ve Got a Home” really does reach so many people in so many different scenarios, and that’s why it’s so special.

Cheers and welcome to the “Get Behind Fanny” podcast!

      Kristen

  6. “You’ve got a home” is definitely relatable to me, as my sister also became a single mom in 1974. After being advised to have an abortion. Her daughter is now an exceptional high school teacher. It is a beautiful and real song. June writes beautiful songs, but i think this one is the most touching.
I’ve never commented about June’s guitar work before. I play, too and i think she is a great guitarist. Chord work, leads and especially slide! Great slide player.
June, we love you and I’ll be sending all the positive vibes I can to help you overcome this. Which you will.
    Peace
    E

    1. Thank you so much for your positive vibes, Eric!
I’ll make sure June knows you send her your best!
      Alice

    2. Hi Eric,

I love hearing that your sister’s daughter is thriving and educating the next generation! As a former professor, I truly respect her decision to teach high school. Wonderful!

As for June’s guitar work, I agree with you. Thank you kindly for continuing to send June all the positive vibes you can. Much appreciated.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

  7. I’ve loved this song from the first time I hurried home from PooBah’s and slapped it on the turntable!
But I have to agree with Alice…I’ve never pictured it about someone….it’s about everyone. A lesbian….a rape victim….a divorcee…a one night stand….someone who realized parenting was not in the other person’s tool box, so to speak….there’s just a lovely universality to the song!
One thing for sure, though….my 2021 years appreciate both the lyrics and music even more! The lyrics are both poetry and prose, while the musicality of the track is sweet and sublime.
Arguably June’s masterpiece during her time with Fanny!
(Kudos to Richard for also realizing ~ at least here! ~ that less often CAN be more!! Case in point….your drumming here, Alice!!!???)

    1. Oh Jef,
You SO get me……and, the name PooBah’s brings back some deep memories! It is amazing, isn’t it, how our 2021 ears tell/give us so much more….
      Love,
      Alice

    2. Hi Jef,

I agree about the universality of June’s lyrics. I was 5 years old when I first heard this song, and my parents were divorced and my life (as a show business kid) was chaotic, to say the least. That’s why I always hoped the song was about me, because it provided me comfort when I felt so very alone. So, yes, it’s a song/lyric about everyone – even if the lyrics don’t fit perfectly into each individual’s situation. That’s why it continues to resonate with people for 5 decades. Talk about a musical gift.

      Cheers,
      Kristen

  8. “You’ve Got a Home” has been a favorite of mine ever since I first listened to the remarkable Fanny Hill album. It the first full Fanny LP I listened to after first watching the Beat Club footage last spring, and this song grabbed me by the heartstrings from the first note. At first, I felt some “Going to California” vibes from the first couple of bars, but then in came that ethereal slide. The background vox get me every time with the perfect harmonies with June, as well as the angelic choral “Ooh”s throughout. The tune has such a warm feeling to it, especially when it’s played on vinyl.

And yes, Alice’s drum part is truly epic. ?

Wonderful episode, as always. Much love to you all. June, we’re all in your corner, sending you so much love and support. ??❤️?❤️??

    1. Hi Tim,
Thank you for your lovely compliment on my “epic drum part.” LOL In all seriousness, though, I appreciate your comments….they match mine pretty closely. I’m happy you’re still enjoying the podcasts!
      Best,
      Alice

    2. Hi Applescruff!

As always, I love your comments. Thank you for all your support, and I hope you’re doing well these days.

      Much love to you,
      Kristen

  9. I totally agree with the social commentary aspect of ‘Youve got a home’. It’s a brave and powerful piece that I’ve always thought brimmed with positivity. Beautifully expressed.
Thanks for another interesting episode guys

Strength & courage to you June x

    Cheers

  10. John Lennon once said about the Beatle’s filming HELP! They were so into pot that they were always laughing and talked in their own sort or “beatle” language to each other. “No one could talk to us”; he said. They were sort of on their own planet, for sure. Now that I have prefaced this stupid, ridiculous question that no one in their right mind, especially seasoned journalists who are now gagging as I write…here it is. (I cringe as I write) Was there…”fannyspeak”? Be honest now. Let’s all face it, we had our own code back then. My code was when I listened to FANNY I told everyone to “shut up and listen” Now is THAT code or what? (I’m finishing up a sketch of Alice).
