Switching gears a bit for this episode, we talk about the songs “Regular Guy” and “I’m Satisfied” and how they potentially match up with the upcoming inauguration of our new President and Vice-President. Both songs are from “Mothers Pride” and were written by Nickey Barclay.
Hosts Alice, Kristen, and Byron are joined by Jean and June Millington via pre-recorded interviews.

Another satisfying episode. Gratified to learn Nickey could play guitar. Imagine if she had done so live.
I wish I knew about Fanny when they were honored at Berklee in 2007 because I lived in Boston & was 10 minute walk away from the auditorium. But as Alice says, “It’s not when you discovered Fanny. It’s that you discovered Fanny.”
Finally, I hope for a safe Inauguration & then Biden-Harris could Make America Boring Again. .
Thank you so much, Aaron! I enjoyed reading your comments. And, yes, a boring America is something I long for these days. Cheers!
Thanks, Aaron!
It was just Jean, June and me in Boston for the Berklee presentation, as Nickey was (and is) not up for reuniting, but the three of us “Fanny’d” it up quite nicely. We were kind of like a power trio, and Jean and I fell right back into the groove we’d developed all those years ago.
And, yes, I’ll take boring over waking up every day for the last four years asking, “What institution has he blown up this time?”
Best,
Alice

Another enjoyable broadcast. I usually end up playing the Fanny “First Time in a Long Time: The Reprise Recordings” collection after each show. These audio trips down memory lane are offer fantastic insights and lots of fun! Pivot! Pivot! (Don’t shut up….)
Thank you, Bob!
Hi Bob – So great to hear that you’re enjoying the podcasts, as well as listening to Fanny! Even better that you do them in tandem. Wonderful! Cheers, Kristen
Thanks, Bob!
I find myself doing the same thing sometimes. You know….a memory gets triggered, and down the rabbit hole I go. Glad you’re enjoying our efforts!
Alice
Yet another great podcast!Thank you and keep up the good work.I am looking forward to finding out the rumors and secrets!Gonna spin my Fanny Hill record now that you’ve ignited my Fanny Fever
Hi Guy – Nothing better than igniting Fanny fever! So glad you enjoyed the podcast. 🙂
Guy,
I’ve always loved a good fire!
HA!
Alice
Is everyone aware the FANNY’s harmonizing is so natural with voices that blend perfectly. The only other time I’ve heard this is…ready?…The BEATLES. One other thing I want to mention is women world leaders. Remember Benazir Buhtto who was Pakistan’s leader. She served as Prime Minister of Pakistan from 1988 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1996. She was the first woman to head a democratic government in a Muslim majority nation. one time and was eventually assassinated by some extreme bonehead who blew himself up. I always thought this was a travesty. Kudos to President Biden for selecting Kamala Harris as the VP.
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the vocal compliments….although I only had to sing harmony live. The band knew I was always tempted toward sharp or flat…LOL!
I, too, am so happy to FINALLY have a woman at the helm (okay, first mate) of this country. I’ve always felt that women are so much less likely to trip over their egos…..
Best,
Alice
Fanny were too professional to allow to sing if you were “always tempted toward sharp or flat.”
Did June use a Big Muff on her guitar recording Charity Ball? I loved the sound of her lead in that song.
I’ll ask her on the next interview. 🙂
I never ever knew Nickey played guitar so it makes sense now that she wrote it. I was always under the impression she was a keyboardist. What a fucking incredible musician and write she was. I lobbied for “Regular Guy” early on and am grateful it was featured. I love the middle 8. I still say this song could have been on Rubber Soul or the White Album. You gave credit to Nigel bringing this up but…I think it was me. I can pick up on Rundgren’s production influence in “I’m Satisfied”. It’s good production even though I am not a Rundgren fan. It’s a great Fanny song. Me love ’em the rock and roll. I am one who listens to the track first, as well June and Byron!!! Beatle’s engineer Ken Townsend created the flanger sound on Revolver. It was cool the album name was mentioned in this song. Oh yeah…Where IS the fucking doll? I was going to request “Candlelighter Man” and “What Kind of Lover”. It’s like you read my goddam mind (what’s left of it. ) Can’t wait! Thanks again for these incredible podcasts!
Hi Steve – Yes, thank you for the suggestion of “Regular Guy” a while back. Nigel was the one who said that “Polecat Blues” could’ve been on the White Album. So, you can take credit for saying “Regular Guy” could’ve been on Rubber Soul. (I picked Revolver.) Thanks, as always, for you great comments and feedback!
Cheers,
Kristen
Kristen,
I’m reminded of Chelsea Clinton…..for some odd reason!
Alice
Haha! 😉
Hi Steve,
I’m glad we were finally able to get to “Regular Guy.” It’s always been a favorite of mine, too. I think the “doll” is in a landfill in Germany by now…..LOL
Alice
Another fab episode! Interesting to hear about the ‘flange’ (?) technique – I’m not up on studio tricks & wizardry (still trying to get my head round it) – crazy-good guitars on ‘Im satisfied’. 2 good song choices – love the echoey, resonating vocal sound on both. ‘Regular guy’ should be on a movie soundtrack! I like the way it ends, it’s a really nicely crafted piece. I’m sure if you look up the dictionary definition of groovy it just says ‘Candle lighter man’! Love it and looking forward to ‘what kind of lover’ (one of my faves) being discussed also – really nice vocal style (all parts spot on) and Alice’s drums on this are so cool – impeccable – another Fanny funk-nugget with buckets-o-‘tude! Can’t wait for the myths and rumours either – intriguing! Pivoting prowess beyond reproach this episode by the way. And thanks for the b’day shout out! It made me smile!
Cheers,
Brian
Thanks, Brian, and a personal Happy Birthday to you!
Thanks for your comments, and for being “here” for Fanny. Kristen is teaching me (or has taught me) the art of the pivot…. I think I might be improving..Ha!
Best,
Alice
Another great episode!
Once again, “Regular Guy” and “I’m Satisfied” shows the power and breadth of the Fanny Spectrum!
“Regular Guy” is easily Nickey’s most organic song (and, yes, she and June are credited as playing guitar in the liner notes!), while “I’m Satisfied” is a prime example of Fanny blowing the doors off the barn….EFFORTLESSLY!!!
So, SO good!!
These podcasts are awesome!
Say, Alice, what was that extra blue sparkle floor tom you toured with? I’m sorry for the dorky gear question. I LOVE LOVE LOVE your drumming and I’ve always wondered.
Please keep doing more podcasts. Also, are there Fanny outtakes from albums? B-sides? Unreleased songs? Demos?
Thanks,
Michael
Some of the stuff you mentioned was on the Rhino CD 4-pack from about 20 years ago. We can probably drag some of those out here soon.
Hey guys, another great show. The podcast is such fun. Love the stories and ,of course, the music. MARIACHI!! Sorry, had to.? Flanger is one of my favorite effects. I use it a lot.
Like you I am hoping inauguration day goes on with no problems and some good stuff can start happening for everyone.
Peace,
E
Flanging is a cool effect, especially on guitar and drums. In the 60s, they used it on sections of songs and it is quite psychedelic! Keeping my fingers crosse the worst of the terrorism is over and we can begin to heal as a country.
another great podcast, I really look forward to these; I can’t believe you just slid right over “that line” in I’m Satisfied, thought you might say, “no Nickey didn’t mean THAT, she was talking about THIS”; that would have earned an Explicit Content rating if that existed then 🙂
